The facts. These delightful terriers were developed to be carried on horse back and allowed out of their pouch to flush out anything the fox hounds were hunting, but were too big to get out of the hole their prey went in. After flushing out the fox hounds prey, the Jack Russell was returned to the pouch on horseback. Any Jack Russell attempting to kill the prey was culled from the hunt. They were not killers...more so chasers and clowns...They were not in constant motion...as most were carried most of the time in a pouch with a mounted rider. Such was the original short legged ( also known as puddin ), Jack Russell. I had one 30 years ago, and fell in love as many horse people did in the U.S.
Unfortunately with the importation of these dogs from Europe, came their popularity. To keep up with demand they were bred with other terriers including Fox and Rat terriers. Changing their conformation and temperament. Giving us the taller and more active Parson and Russell terrier, both eventually accepted as breeds with AKC, but not the beloved Terrier I fell in love with. AKC has not accepted the shorter legged Jack Russell terrier as of yet, but many have been granted limited registry in the Russell Terrier division.
30 years later I was fortunate to find breeders that wanted to keep the Short Legged Jack Russell breed alive. They imported many from Europe and were able to keep these terriers as lovable and fun as I remember my first, tending to kittens and chicks, jumping over live ground hogs to catch the ball, and coming to sleep every night under the covers of my bed. Thank You to Happi-Jack, Lazy C, Russellville, and Cow Country Kennels for assisting me in setting up my breeding stock here in Wisconsin.
WHY ARE MY PUPS DIFFERENT? First and foremost I want a more docile and less hunter temperament. My first Jack Russell would jump over a ground hog to get his ball. He babysat new born kittens and even fathered a clutch of chicks...He wasn't lazy..just not wanting to run after anything that moved. My first two adorable girls, Mugwhy and Munchkin sleep in the head board in my bed, and are allowed to run loose down our nature trail, in general they would prefer to be with me. Second..all my pups are raised in my home..right in the living room, and when old enough are allowed with older adults..usually my Goldendoodles , to learn respect of older dogs and continue lessons on discipline and proper play. All my pups are started on housebreaking.
